Happy New Year!

Wow! What a crazy month of December. I have tried to keep up with blogging more recently, but December hit and I had no free time. I'm afraid now, we have some serious Christmas clean up to do, and I need to update my coupon box, but I am hoping to be back early in January to continue. :)

Happy New Year everyone!!

Friday Favorite - Coupon Mom

One of my absolute favorite sites is CouponMom.com! Actually, this is how I started on my whole coupon journey. I happened to be home one morning when Stephanie Nelson (aka Coupon Mom) was on Oprah. I watched the entire show and was fascinated at the video footage of Stephanie shopping at her local grocery store. She started with $100 dollars worth of groceries and cut it down to under $20!! It was truly amazing! That week, I jumped on her site, read her ebooks, checked out the forums, and learned so much about saving money! I highly recommend you check out this site whether you're a beginner or have been couponing for ages! I learned a lot from Stephanie and the members on the forum. My favorite feature on the site is the Grocery Coupon Database. You select your state, then search for a certain product and a list comes up of what week's insert your coupon is in. Super helpful! Check it out!

Friday Favorite - EBates

One of my favorite sites is EBates! I use EBates every time I shop online. EBates offers a cash back percentage on your online shopping. Each store has a specific percentage (JCPenney is 4% back). But there are always specials. Like right now, Old Navy is 10% back! This is the highest I've ever seen a store on EBates. The best part is, you can still use all your coupon codes! This is just one more way to rack up the savings! They also offer a $5.00 sign up bonus! Sign up here!

Weekly Grocery Deals

For whatever reason, I no longer get the Jewel and Dominick's ads on Wednesday. I used to get them every week, but all of a sudden they stopped coming. So, I always forget to look at the ads until I decided to head out to the store and then I have to look at the ad online and try to find one in the store. And, to make things worse, i am still just not great at the grocery game. (I have much better luck at drugstores.) So.... check out Couponing for 4's great lists here:

Don't forget!! Cheap Ice Cream Tonight Only!!

Tonight only!! From 5 til 10 PM! 31 cent scoops!! You can read more info here. I would recommend calling ahead to make sure your nearest Baskin Robbins is participating.

I love JCPenney!!

I love JCPenney!! I think they have the best doorbusters, and it seems that everytime I need something and am dreading trying to find a good price on it, Penney's has a big sale shortly after that. I have to say, I also have been very impressed with their customer service! For me, that's a big plus!! The last time I shopped when they had coupons off for $10 off $50 or $15 off $75. I was only trying to use the $15 as I had a lot of stuff that I was purchasing. The cashier explained to me that the coupons will take off percentages of each iem, so that it totals at $15 and then proceeded to use BOTH coupons, saving me $25!! (Your milage may vary on this though, I don't think all cashiers would be willing to do this.) I have also found that I have never had problems returning anything, EVER! Even online orders or catalog orders. I placed an order online over the weekend, and even got a phone call just to thank me for ordering and to let me know when the item will be shipped. I just want to give credit to my favorite department store for a job well done!!

Since it's Tuesday and I still haven't opened my ads, I thought I would at lease post links to someone else's deals. Better that than me posting it on Friday, right?

Check out CVS delas here.

Saturday Shopping

Jewel Trip:
Items : 18
Regular Price: 57.57
OOP: 17.00
Savings: 70%

I di try to get the Wheat Thins, but they were all sold out of the Artisan flavors. (This is what the BOGO Q specifies.) So I got a rain check, and we'll see what happens when I try it.

Walgreens Trip
Items : 11
Regular Price: 16.39
OOP: .25
Savings: 98%
RR Left: 2.00

I didn't have to use any RR. Walgreens has Mento gum on sale for 1.00 (only when you buy 2 or more) and I used 11 1.00 off coupons from 3/1. *I believe this is a monthly deal, so you can still get yours!*

We also did a little bit of clothes shopping at Sears on Saturday. They were having a huge clearance sale. (We actually didn't know this, we were just killing some time and decided to go into Sears. I also think this sale runs for another week.) They had an extra 30 %off all clearance items. We walked out of the store with 10 items, originally $422.98!! We only paid $88.86 (8.26 in tax). Still, that's 70% off. We each got a couple of things, plus I was able to snag a birthday present and a Christmas present out of the trip. (Not presents for me.) Here's a picture of Brian modeling some of his new stuff. The jacket he got originally cost 100.00, more than what we paid for all 10 items!!

Friday Shopping

Jewel Trip:
Items : 18
Regular Price: 57.57
OOP: 17.00
Savings: 70%

I got the Smart balance tubs for 2.00 each, they're on sale for 2.50 and you can use the 1.00 off 2 from the 2/1. Then I stacked these with the Buy one tub, get one butter blends sticks free coupon from 3/1 to get 4 packages of sticks for free. Super Pretzels are on sale BOGO @ 3.59. Use the .75 coupon from 2/22 or 3/15. Make sure you use one coupon for each one you buy (even the free one!) I also had one more free gum coupon from 3/15. I did plan on buying some more super pretzles. We LOVE these and with the coupons they were only 2.09 for 2 boxes! But I snagged the last three boxes, so I grabbed a rain check good through the end of the month. Also, I didn't bring all my coupons with me, but Wheat Thins are BOGO and there is a BOGO Q from 3/15. This sale is going through April 15th, so I will be heading back there for some wheat thins. I have never tried to use a BOGO Q with a BOGO sale, but I have heard that you will get both items for free! (You do pay tax, of course.) So I think I may go do this today or tomorrow and I will update when I get home.

Coupon Geek has a list of Jewel deals here.

Walgreens Trip:
Items : 4
Regular Price: 17.96
OOP: .58
Savings: 97%
RR Left: 2.00

My subtotal was zero!! All I paid was .58 in tax!!! I used the 2.50 off equal coupons from 1/4. These expire today, so if you have them, go use them for some free equal! Plus I used my free softsoap coupon I earner earlier this week.

CVS Trip This Week

From this trip:
Items : 14
Regular Price: 59.47
OOP: 5.06
Savings: 91%
ECB Left: 17.98

I used 7.99 EDB and got back 9.99, plus the 7.99 I didn't use. Also, I will send in the rebate on the Organix shampoo, so there's another 4.99.
I wasn't very excited about these deals this week, but I wanted to use a 5.00 off 30.00 coupon that expired on Monday. (You can use those before all your other coupons!)

Check out all of this weeks deals here.

March End CVS Totals:
Items : 90
Regular Price: 274.82
OOP: 65.81
Savings: 76%
ECB Left: 17.98

All March Shopping:
Items: 264
Regular Price: 682.40
OOP: 203.51
Savings: 70%

Plus: 2.00 RR, 1 FREE softsoap body wash, 17.98 ECB, and 4.99 MIR.

A bit more OOP than I would like, but it's so great to see this improvement from just a few months ago. We are all stocked up on cereal, coffeemate, pasta, and some other everyday needs. April should be a much lighter shopping month. This is only 6 months after I learned how to shop the smart way, and although it takes some time, and I am not always on top of everything, it is so great to have the freezer, fridge, and pantry all stocked up!

WAGS Trip This Week

From this trip:
Items : 34
Regular Price: 74.86
OOP: 7.49
Savings: 90%
RR Left: 2.00 plus a free Softsoap Body wash

Pretty good! I used 18.00 in RR that I had saved up from last week, and earned back 2.00 for next week. At any of the Walgreens near me, if you use RR then none will print. So I always do one transaction for everything that doesn't give me RR and use last weeks. Then I do another transaction for this week's RR.

Some freebies from this trip:
Equal: on sale for 2.50, use 2.50 from 1/4
Reynold's Wrap: use WAGS Q for .89, and use 1.00 off from 2/8. (MONEYMAKER)
Reese's: Free hershey's bar with 20 oz. Coke product.
Gum: with FREE coupon from 3/15.
Chapstick: 1.99 with 1.99 RR

Check out all other deals here.

March End Walgreens Totals: (This is without my trip from Spring Break)
Items : 99
Regular Price: 205.84
OOP: 62.49
Savings: 70%
RR Left: 2.00 plus FREE softsoap body wash

Here's the pic of the bottom of my receipt from the first transaction. LOVE IT!

Weekly Grocery Trip

*Not a great picture, but I was really trying to get everything in*

I did this trip on Monday, so some deals have expired, but there are a few still going on.

Items : 45
Regular Price: 91.52
OOP: 44.14
Savings: 52%

Not as great as last time, but still more than half of what it would normally have been. That's generally my goal when shopping. I stick to my budget, stick to my list (for the most part), and try to aim for 50% savings or more.

Some highlights:
Activia Yogurt normally 2.95, on sale for 2.00, less 1.00 coupon = FINAL COST 1.00
Del Monte fruit cups normally 1.85, on sale for 1.00, less 1.00 coupon = FINAL COST FREE!!
Wrigley's gum 1.25 less free item coupon = FREE GUM!

You can still get the gum if you have the coupon from 3/15.
DelMonte fruit cups are still on sale use coupon from 3/1.

March End Grocery Totals:
Items : 75
Regular Price: 201.74
OOP: 75.21
Savings: 63%

Not bad!

Spring Break Last Week

So sorry I didn't get any posting done last week. I spent my spring break at my mom's and while I thought I would get quite a bit of blogging done, I was busier than I thought. Plus, I got sick. So of course, nothing got done. I did a little shopping while I was there, however. I thought it was a great opportunity to see how well I could get WalMart deals and Dollar General deals. I was disappointed in both trips. I didn't find ANYthing at dollar general, and I spent way too much time in walmart. So, I think I will stick to my favorites. I did have one really good Walgreens trip while visiting. I walked out of the store paying 4.00 and saving 65.00!! I also did some shopping this week since I've been back home, and hpe to get that posted tonight or tomorrow.

Also, big coupon wekkend coming up!! This Sunday will have 5 inserts! Yes, 5!! It looks like we will be getting 4 papers. Hip2Save has the info here.

I will be looking over the Jewel ad that I got yesterday and finding some good deals to be posted tomorrow!

Here's the bottom of my Walgreen's reciept from my trip home.

Swagbucks

You may have noticed the Swagbucks banner I added to my blog. First I want to say, I really don't want to overload my blog with buttons, banners, and advertisements. There's nothing wrong with any of these things, but personally, I find it a little distracting. There I am reading someone's blog and all of a sudden the banners and switching and ads and moving around and then I don't remember which part I was at. I know that you can earn money blogging by having ads and other things, and I don't want to offend anyone who has banners and buttong on their blogs, I just want to keep mine mostly banner free.

That being said, I added the Swagbucks banner to my blog. I have heard about awagbucks from various different people and blogs, but never really got around to checking it out. Now, I really wish I had sooner! Swagbucks os basically just another search engine (like Google) that rewards you for searching. For signing up, you get three swagbucks to start with. Then through searching the internet, you will randomly get awarded swagbucks. At first, I thought it would really not be worth it, but it a little over a week I earned 65 Swagbucks. You use your Swagbucks to buy items from the Swag store. They have a 5.00 Amazon gift card for only 45 Swagbucks. the best part is, once you sign up, tell your friends about it. When a friend signs up through you, you will earn one swagbuck for EVERY swagbuck they earn! Get started and sign up here today!

How To Shop

How to shop? Sounds funny, huh? What I mean is how to coupon. When I started this blog, I was just excited to track my own shopping expenses and watch how much I could get for how little. I figured that as I got better at finding deals, my cost of shopping would go way down. And it has! What I didn't realize when I started blogging was how much I would enjoy it. I love reading other blogs, and I really do like posting on this one, it just doesn't happen all the time. I had hoped that by the time I figured out how to get the best deals at every store, that I would sit and write a how to post (like How to CVS.) I think at this point, I have figured out what works best for me and I am able to explain it okay to others, but I don't think I would really get the point across. So, I know some of you are just starting your own frugal journey or maybe you have been for a while already, but I would like to link you to Hip2Save's how to posts. I think she does a wonderful job explaining how to get the deals to work for you.

March Grocery Savings

Here is the one major grocery trip we have made so far in March. the new ad for Jewel just started today, so I am hoping to go over it and get some Jewel deals posted. I just wanted to say that the cheese deal I did last week is still going on, but just until Sunday, March 15th. You can get 7 bags or bricks of Kraft cheese for just 1.00 after OYNO coupons. Check out all the details at Mummy Deal's post here. BTW, somehow I did this deal wrong and ended up paying 4.00 for 7 bags of cheese. If you're worried about buying more than you think you will use, remember: bags of cheese freeze really well. And in whatever shape you need to get them all into the freezer. I did the cheese deal twice, then bought the rest of my groceries using the 2 10.00 OYNO Qs.

March Update

Hello again. Well, I think I wasn't quite ready to jump headfirst back into the blogging world last month. I hate that I haven't been regularly posting for two months, but there's not a lot I can do about it now. Since I posted last, I have been trying to catch up on my couponing pile. Yes, pile! I should have taken a picture of it. Really, I had around 80 coupon inserts to get through. I did get them all clipped on Friday, just in time for this weeks papers. I have to send out a big thank you to our neighbor who has been giving us extra inserts. I had 30 from the last two weeks alone! I was also able to get some shopping done at the end of last week and over the weekend. I have some great pictures to post and some awesome deals to share that are still going on. I can't promise I will have them all up tonight, but I will try. (Otherwise, look for them tomorrow.) I also have to give an update on our $40 challenge. (you can find my original post here.) We have been sticking to the $40 a week. And doing it pretty well. I can't vouch for the end of January, because I didn't go over our reciepts yet (if anything, it is under our budget), but since the beginning of February, I have been adding $40 to the envelope. We did let it build up for 2 or 3 weeks and did a grocery trip mid February. We then let it build up again the last two weeks in order to do this weeks shopping. (We ended up with about $110 for this past weekend. $30 from last week, $40 from this week and we used next week's $40 since we won't be home to do any shopping. I won't be adding money this Thursday, I will wait until next Thursday.
Sorry for such a long and babbling post, but I am still here, just going slow at the moment. Thanks for sticking around!!

Did You Miss Me?

Sorry everyone! I don't really even have an excuse for not blogging in about a month. Isn't that sad? Really, I have been getting used to a new schedule. On top of that, I have been looking for a job. Good news: I found one. I am now part time nannying. Throw that into the schedule, and it is packed!! Not that there's anything wrong with that! I have to say that I love being busy and, not to mention, having a job! However, I think my blogging may take a hit. Along with shopping. Along with my busy schedule, Brian and I have not been home on the weekends. Yes, the whole weekend. Generally, if we have something to do out of town on the weekends, then we just plan on staying out there for the whole weekend. HOWEVER, I have not gone shopping in weeks. Really!! Luckily, when we were shopping, I had really stocked us up on a lot of things. But now I have a stack of inserts from a month to cut out and organize and plan a trip. Soooo.....long story short: sorry fpr not blogging in FOREVER and I will be posting some freebies and coupon links this week, then I'm hoping to be organized by this weekend. And I can post my insane shopping trips next week, plus a plan for CVS and Walgreens.

How Great is This!!

Look what we got! I can't believe it! So, we live in Chicago and don't have a car. Which is fine....usually. We used to go grocery shopping and just buy like 4 bags worth of groceries so we could each carry 2 home and then buy a lot of stuff at Walgreens. When I started couponing in October, we really started buying a lot more. With coupons, we've been able to buy a lot more stuff without spending any more money. Plus, we have been trying to stockpile when there is a great deal on something. Although we love having more groceries and never running out of toothpaste, laundry detergent, and shampoo; we have not enjoyed carrying all this stuff home. I have been looking for a cart like this to help us carry everything home. Of course, I can't find anything. I figured the thrift store would be our best bet, but I still wasn't able to find one. While at my family's Christmas Eve dinner, I was talking about my blog and how I've been looking for one of these carts. Lo and behold, my aunt and uncle just happened to have one in their basement. I couldn't believe it! I'm not kidding you, I was so excited! I am still telling people all about this cart! I just had to post some pictures. It really does hold a lot of stuff and it's easy to push and get on and off the bus.

So a big thank you to my aunt and uncle for this wonderful cart!!!

$40 Challenge

Brian and I are trying a new method for our shopping. I had been setting monthly goals for our shopping and we have been pretty good on ending the month right around our budget. Sometimes a little over and sometimes a little under. But we have not been keeping up with our budget throughout the month, just checking at the end of each month and then determining if we need to spend less or not.

So, we are going to try a new tactic. I am now taking $40 out of the bank each week and keeping this in an envelope along with my ECB and WAGS GC. This is it. All we get. $40 for groceries and our other shopping needs. Of course, special occasion shopping is different. Birthday presents and such will not come out of this envelope. I am hoping this will help us decide if its an item we really need or just something we want. Maybe next month, we will be able to cut on envelope to $30 a week. for now, we will be trying $40. I will be bringing a calculator with me always to help out in the store and get the best possible deals. We are hoping to go to Aldi once a month and then do other grocery shopping at Jewel for the rest of the month and make small trips here and there to CVS and Walgreens. I will keep posting how we are doing and feel free to join me with whatever amount works for you and your family.

It looks like a lot of sausage, but...well, okay it IS a lot of sausage, but believe me, this will last us probably 6 months. I froze most of it and we will be using it to make all kinds of stuff. I'm not sure which of the Jewel deals will still be going on, just because not everything is advertised. If your store still has the glade candle holders, these are a great money maker. I found mine with the left over Christmas stuff. FYI, it doesn't have any candles with is, just the holder. I'm waiting for the candles to go on sale. I figured, even if I can't use them for a while, it was worth the overage.

Some Cheap Entertainment Ideas

In 2009, I would really like to make an effort to go to more events in the city. Being so close to so many different plays, musicals, museums, and concerts, I think we don't take advantage of them as much as we should. One problem is the cost. I would love to go see a play every weekend, but the cost of parking, food, and tickets make this almost impossible. Some options for cutting the cost down: take public transportation and have dinner at home before you go out or if you're going for the day (like to the museum or zoo) bring lunch with you. If you have your heart set on eating out, check out restaurant.com and get a discounted gift certificate to use that day. Make sure you read the specifications and use a coupon code.
To counter ticket prices, I have found a few great options. I love to use Goldstar Events to find discounted tickets. This is not just a Chicago thing, so feel free to check this out. I have an old post here with links to their website. If you use the link there, I get a bonus on my account. :)

Some ideas in Chicago:
Check out the Chicago Symphony Orchestra website. This page has the dates for the Civic events, many of which are free or very cheap. This is not THE Orchestra, but still worthwhile to check out the events.
Alos, you can sign up for Broadway in Chicago email alerts here. They will send you emails of special deals before they are avialable to the public. You can go here to see the current special deals open to all. Right now, they have Jersey Boys and Dirty Dancing tickets around half price.
